Steam and condensate need clear paths
Steam must move air out of the system while condensate drains back without pooling. Lost pitch, restricted returns, partially closed one-pipe valves, failed vents, and poorly arranged piping can create noise, slow heat, and water carryover.
Vent mains quickly and radiators deliberately
Main venting helps steam fill the distribution piping at low pressure. Radiator venting should then balance the rooms rather than compensate for poor main venting with oversized radiator vents. Two-pipe systems may use traps or other return arrangements that require different testing.
