Where the water can go

Fresh water contains oxygen and minerals. Continual feeding accelerates corrosion and can shorten cast-iron boiler life. The feeder is a safety device, not a substitute for finding the loss.
Watch the sight glass
A surging waterline may indicate dirty boiler water, oils, improper piping, or wet steam. Water can leave the boiler temporarily and return later, causing the feeder to add water the system did not need and eventually flood the boiler.
