Reverse osmosis is commonly used at a drinking-water faucet for a broader range of dissolved material.

Symptoms can overlap

Orange staining may come from iron, disturbed rust, old galvanized piping, or a water heater. White scale suggests hardness but does not explain every taste or odor. Diagnosing the source keeps the treatment system from masking a plumbing or equipment problem.

Plan ownership cost, not only installation cost

Replacement cartridges, salt, media life, sanitizing, drain use, pressure drop, and service access affect long-term value. The simplest system that reliably addresses verified concerns is usually the best place to start.
